Bandwidth overbooking is widely adopted by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to improve bandwidth utilization efficiency. However, excessive overbooking may increase the risk of interface saturation and degrade network performance. This study evaluates the capacity of a Fast Ethernet interface by analyzing the actual contention ratio in a MikroTik-based network. A quantitative observational approach was employed through passive traffic monitoring using the RouterOS Graphing feature over a continuous 14-day observation period during peak hours (19:00–23:00 WIB). The observed network consisted of 67 active clients with a Total Allocated Bandwidth (TAB) of 460 Mbps distributed over a 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet interface. The highest outbound traffic recorded during the observation period was 76.26 Mbps, resulting in an actual contention ratio of approximately 1:6. The results indicate that the actual contention ratio of 1:6 does not lead to interface saturation, with utilization reaching 76.26% of the available interface capacity and a remaining headroom of 23.74 Mbps. These findings demonstrate that the current bandwidth allocation strategy remains feasible strictly from an interface capacity standpoint, based on interface headroom availability. Nevertheless, because this feasibility has not been validated against Quality of Service (QoS) metrics (e.g., latency, jitter, packet loss), upgrading the distribution infrastructure to Gigabit Ethernet is recommended to enhance network scalability and mitigate future interface saturation.
